AJAX gone mobile: Opera Platform brings AJAX applications to the mobile phone

Opera Software today released a beta version of Opera Platform SDK, a software development kit for developing and running Web applications on mobile phones. With Opera Platform SDK, developers can rapidly develop Web applications that let users interact with information in new ways. For example, a Web application can be an email client, a game, or a stock ticker.

Opera Platform allows developers to create platform independent applications based on well known Web technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Together with XMLHttpRequest, the combination of these technologies is popularly referred to as AJAX. AJAX is a Web development technique that is increasingly used to develop new Internet services such as Google Maps and Amazon A9 Search. Opera Platform enables these types of rich Web applications to be developed and used on mobile phones. In addition, Developers can easily adapt existing content and Web applications to run on mobile phones using Opera Platform.

"The full Web browser has proved itself as a central application on mobile phones and is today the main source for data traffic on mobile networks," says Timo Bruns, Vice President for Business Development, Opera Software. "With Opera Platform we are now building the foundation for the next generation of mobile services by enabling the easy, fast and cost- effective creation of compelling Web based mobile applications."

Opera offers also a free download available for registered users of their Opera Platform SDK, to start developing AJAX applications for mobile. Registered users of the Opera Platform SDK are entitled to:

  • Five non-commercial licenses for Opera Platform on Nokia Series 60 phones. Opera Platform for MS Smartphone will be made available later
  • Example Web Applications for Opera Platform including News, Weather, Google search and more. Install this application set and Opera Platform on your Series 60 phone to try out some examples of mobile Web Applications created using the Opera Platform SDK
  • Opera Desktop Browser* for running Opera Platform based mobile Web Applications in a test enviroment. You can use this version of the Opera Desktop Browser to develop and test your own mobile Web applications, or to run the example Opera Platform Web applications made available as part of this SDK.
  • Relevant documentation and specifications for creating your own Opera Platform based mobile Web applications.
  • Tools for creating installation files for your own Opera Platform based mobile Web applications.
  • Access to the Opera Platform SDK group on the Opera Community web site

Been looking forward to something like this a long time. Developers will jump at the chance to feed us users with their latest brainstorms applied to mobile wirless handsets.
In only one short year i have gone from a simple camera phone to being able to "at will" snap shots and video then instantly zip them off at the press of a button to either my web site gallery, flickr, or even email to whom or whatever.
I can't wait to see whats in store now with the application possibilities with AJAX and the wireless mobile phone web.
