IMP webmail with AJAX = DIMP !

I don't agree too much with the new name DIMP, but I was using IMP webmail with horde since long time. Today I was reading that an AJAX version of IMP have been developped in the last months. some of the great feature include :

* 3-pane layout with message preview
* Drag-and-drop support
* Context menus
* Scrollable mailbox listing being updated in the background
* Instant reply and forward
* Simplified folder management

During the last few months we developed a webmail interface on top of the successful IMP webmail client, using AJAX technologies to provide the look and feel of a desktop email client to the users. This new application is called DIMP, short for "Dynamic IMP", in line with MIMP, our webmail interface for mobile clients. [...] Altogether this was a great experience and a lot of fun and a nice case to show what you can achieve on top of some good open source software.

There is some screenshots posted but code haven't been released yet. IMP is certainly one of the very known webmails have have been developped since 8 years, very stable and open source. And the experience of relaunching IMP to compete with current webmails is very interesting, and hope to get a copy very soon to upgrade my current webmail. Jan is talking also about the browsers compatibility issue and some improvements specially on performance

As a consequence we also improved IMP's performance while we were there, implementing a mailbox cache to no longer require loading the complete mailbox headers on each page load. This should help especially on large mailboxes and slow IMAP servers. But even that can backfire if you are working on a 3 million users site. If you cache too much data, you have to buy another server farm to put all the additional hard drives in. ;-)
